Culture and history info

Hermanus has a long history dating back to the the Khoi and San peoples of Southern Africa. Evidence that they lived in the area has been discovered in a cave at Hoy's Koppie located in the center of town. In the early 1800’s a gentleman by the name of Hermanus Pieters discovered Hermanus which became known as Hermanupietersfontein. Interestingly enough the decision was made to shorten the name to Hermanus in 1902 as postal taxes were levied on each letter of the towns name.
The first permanent settlers arrived in 1857. The Henn family pitched a camp next to the waterfall discovered by Mr Pieters in town and built the first permanent buildings along the present day Marine Drive. By the late 1800's Hermanus had had become a bustling fishing village with a number of hotels, shops and a post office. Word spread fast and Hermanus was soon prescribed to the ill as an ideal location for recuperation and rest  because of the champagne air. A sanatorium was even erected over looking Walker Bay. The building now houses the Windsor Hotel. Did you know that Hermanus has a train station but no trains pass thought the town? Sir William Hoy, head of the South Africa Railways and Harbour Services enjoyed to holiday in Hermanus during the summer and had a great fondness for the small town.
